What is KDP?

Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is Amazon's self-publishing platform. It allows authors to publish Kindle eBooks, paperbacks and hardcovers and make them available to readers through Amazon.

KDP uses print-on-demand for printed books, so you do not normally need to print and store large quantities of books in advance.

In simple terms: you provide the properly prepared book, KDP handles the Amazon listing and, for printed editions, prints copies when customers order them.

Once your manuscript and cover are ready, the book is set up in your KDP account, the files are uploaded and the book is checked using KDP's preview tools.

For printed books, you can order a proof copy before publication. Once you are satisfied with the finished book, you can submit it to Amazon for publication.

After approval, customers can order the book through Amazon, while printed copies are produced on demand.

Professional guidance for authors who want to publish through Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing

Have you written a book and want to make it available to readers through Amazon?

Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) allows authors to publish books without going through a traditional publishing house. You can publish an eBook, paperback, hardcover, or a combination of formats, and your printed books can be produced on demand when customers place orders.

HOW KDP PUBLISHING WORKS

The KDP process can be broken down into a series of straightforward stages.

1. Prepare your manuscript

Before a book is uploaded to KDP, the manuscript should be complete and properly prepared.

This may involve:

• Editing and proofreading

• Correcting spelling and grammar

• Improving structure and presentation

• Formatting chapters and headings

• Preparing the title page and other front matter

• Preparing the contents page where appropriate

• Adding copyright information

• Preparing an author biography

• Checking page numbering and layout

• Preparing the manuscript for eBook and/or print publication

A manuscript that is ready to publish is much more than a Word document containing the finished text. It needs to be prepared for the particular format in which readers will receive it.

2. Decide which format you want

KDP supports three principal book formats:

Kindle eBook: A digital edition that readers can purchase and read on Kindle devices and compatible apps.

Paperback: A printed edition produced through Amazon's print-on-demand system.

Hardcover: A hardbound printed edition, also produced on demand.

You can publish one format or create several editions of the same book.

If you want your book available as both an eBook and a printed book, each edition needs to be prepared appropriately for its format. KDP can link different editions on Amazon when their identifying book information matches correctly.

3. Prepare the book's cover

A professional cover is an important part of publishing.

For a paperback, the cover is not simply the front image. It is normally one complete cover file containing:

Back cover + spine + front cover

The dimensions depend on the book's trim size, page count, paper and other print specifications.

The cover should therefore be prepared specifically for the final book rather than simply using an ordinary front-cover image.

KDP provides cover templates and tools to help authors prepare covers to its specifications.

4. Choose the book's physical specifications

For a printed book, several decisions have to be made before publication.

These can include:

• Trim size

• Paperback or hardcover

• Black-and-white or colour interior

• Paper type

• Bleed or no bleed

• Cover finish

• Page layout

• Margins

• Font and text size

• Page numbering

These choices affect the appearance of the finished book and can also affect its printing cost and therefore the economics of the chosen retail price.

5. Decide on the ISBN

An ISBN is the identifying number used for a book edition.

On KDP, eBooks do not require an ISBN.

Paperback and hardcover books generally require an ISBN, except for certain low-content books.

For eligible paperback and hardcover editions, KDP offers a free ISBN. Alternatively, an author can purchase and use their own ISBN.

There is an important difference:

A KDP-provided ISBN is free but is intended for use with KDP.

An ISBN purchased by the author can be used for the same edition with other publishing services, subject to the ISBN's registration and the relevant publisher/distributor requirements.

Different formats, such as paperback and hardcover, require separate ISBNs.

If you are unsure which ISBN option is appropriate for your book, this can be discussed before publication.

6. Create the book on KDP

Once the manuscript and cover are ready, the book is entered into the author's KDP Bookshelf.

The publishing information normally includes:

• Book title

• Subtitle, if applicable

• Author name

• Contributors, where applicable

• Book description

• Publishing rights

• Keywords

• Categories

• ISBN information for print editions

• Primary marketplace

• Print specifications

• Price and royalty information

This information is important because much of it appears on the book's Amazon product page and helps readers find and understand the book.

7. Upload the manuscript and cover

The prepared manuscript and cover files are uploaded to KDP.

KDP then checks the files and provides tools for reviewing how the book is likely to appear.

For a paperback, the interior manuscript and complete cover are uploaded separately.

This is one of the stages where careful checking matters most.

A book can look perfectly acceptable in Microsoft Word and still contain problems when converted into a finished printed book.

8. Preview the book

Before publication, the book should be examined carefully using KDP's previewing tools.

This allows you to check things such as:

• Chapter openings

• Page breaks

• Margins

• Headers and footers

• Page numbers

• Tables of contents

• Images

• Blank pages

• Text alignment

• Cover positioning

• Spine appearance

• Overall presentation

For printed books, KDP also allows authors to order a physical proof copy before publication.

A proof is not mandatory, but it provides an opportunity to inspect the actual printed book before releasing it to customers.

9. Set the price and publishing rights

Before submitting the book, you select the territories in which you have the right to publish and set the retail price.

If you own the necessary rights to your original work, worldwide rights may often be appropriate, but rights should always be selected according to the actual ownership and publishing agreements relating to the book.

The retail price, printing costs and applicable royalty structure all form part of the final publishing decision.

10. Submit the book for publication

Once everything has been checked, the book is submitted to Amazon for review.

KDP reviews submitted books to ensure that they meet its publishing, content and formatting requirements.

After approval, the book becomes available for purchase through the relevant Amazon marketplaces.

Publication is not necessarily instantaneous. KDP currently states that new books can take up to approximately 72 hours to appear on some Amazon marketplaces, with some other marketplaces taking longer.

HOW PRINT-ON-DEMAND WORKS

One of the most useful features of KDP is print-on-demand.

You do not normally need to print hundreds of copies before you know whether anyone wants the book.

Instead, the process works broadly like this:

Customer orders the book

↓

Amazon receives the order

↓

The book is printed

↓

The printed book is fulfilled and shipped to the customer

This means an author can make a printed book available without maintaining a warehouse full of books.

KDP describes its paperback and hardcover service as print-on-demand, with books printed and shipped to customers when ordered.

CAN I GET COPIES OF MY OWN BOOK?

Yes.

Authors can order copies of their published books for their own use.

These may be useful for:

• Personal copies

• Family and friends

• Book launches

• Book signings

• Events

• Promotional activities

• Reviewers

• Presentations

• Schools or organisations

There is an important distinction between an ordinary customer purchase and an author copy.

Customer purchase: A reader purchases the book at its retail price.

Author copy: The author orders copies for their own purposes, generally at the applicable printing cost plus delivery.

Author copies are therefore useful when an author wants physical copies without purchasing them at the normal retail price.

This can involve publishing the book through the publisher's KDP account while the author remains the named author.

However, this is different from simply helping an author publish their own book.

A proper written agreement should establish matters such as:

• Copyright ownership

• Royalty arrangements

• Publishing or service fees

• ISBN ownership

• Printing and other expenses

• Author copies

• Responsibility for the Amazon listing

• Account and publishing control

• What happens if the publishing arrangement ends

The exact arrangement should be agreed before publication.
